Montgomery Bus Boycott

Newscast Activity

This is not a war between the white and the Negro but a conflict between justice and injustice. If we are arrested every day, if we are exploited every day, if we are trampled over every day, don't ever let anyone pull you so low as to hate them. We must use the weapon of love.

Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.
Montgomery,
Alabama, 1955

Objectives:

  • The students will develop a newscast on the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
  • The students will examine and determine the most significant events of the Montgomery Bus Boycott to present in their newscasts.

The newscast activity allows students to present historical information in a context in which they are familiar—the newscast. This activity will encourage research skills as well as reporting skills.

Using the Montgomery Bus Boycott as their historical event, the students will develop a 5 minutes newscast with an anchorperson and reporters stationed at different sites.
